His early postings included diplomatic assignments in Russia, Ukraine, Sri Lanka, USA and Germany, where he gained valuable experience in handling bilateral relations, political negotiations, and economic cooperation.

He served couple of postings at the Indian Embassy in Washington, D.C., steadily rising through the ranks due to his expertise and familiarity with the strategic dimensions of the partnership. His in-depth knowledge of the U.S. political, social and economic landscape, policymaking institutions, and diaspora networks made him particularly effective in strengthening bilateral ties. His appointment as India’s Ambassador to the United States in February 2020 marked a significant milestone, placing him in one of the most critical diplomatic positions. During this tenure, he played a central role in advancing cooperation in defense, trade, technology, energy, and health care with Republican and Democratic administrations. He facilitated high-level diplomatic engagements, reinforced institutional dialogue mechanisms, and actively promoted India’s economic and strategic priorities in a rapidly evolving global challenging geopolitical environment.
Among his notable career highlights was his contribution to strengthening defense cooperation between India and the United States, including support for key agreements and initiatives that enhanced strategic alignment and interoperability. He also worked to expand trade and investment flows, encouraging American companies to engage with India’s dynamic market while showcasing India’s policy reforms and growth potential. In addition, Sandhu placed strong emphasis on outreach to the Indian diaspora, recognizing its importance as a bridge between the two nations. Beyond his role in the United States, Sandhu served as India’s High Commissioner to neighbouring Sri Lanka, where he managed a sensitive and strategically important relationship. Upon assuming office as the 23rdLieutenant Governor of Delhi, Sandhu has brought with him a wealth of international experience and administrative insight. In this role, he oversees key aspects of governance in the National Capital Territory, working in coordination with elected representatives and central government authorities. He brings a strong commitment to efficient administration, transparency, and citizen-centric governance, emphasizing coordination, institutional cooperation, and effective implementation of policies to address the multifaceted challenges of governing a major metropolitan city.
