Taking forward his sustained efforts to remove the legacy garbage mounds in Delhi and rid the city of the garbage menace on a long term basis, Lt. Governor of Delhi, Shri V.K. Saxena yesterday, 02nd June, inspected the Okhla Waste-to-Energy Plant and directed officials to increase the pending capacity of the plant. The Waste-to-Energy Plant currently produces 23 MW electricity by consuming 1950 MT of Solid Waste. The LG directed officials to take necessary steps to increase the garbage consumption at the plant by another 1,000 MT which would also result in an additional 17 MW power production being added. This will take care of processing the entire 3,000 MT of garbage being generated daily in the erstwhile South MCD area.
The LG, accompanied by Special Officer, MCD, Commissioner, MCD and other senior officials went into the plant and witnessed the entire process of generating electricity from garbage.
The LG was informed that increasing power production would require installation of an additional boiler, work for which had been pending because of the public hearing which is mandatory, not having taken place till now even as all other formalities had been complied with. To this, the LG directed officials to expedite the process of conducting public hearing and remove any hurdle in increasing the garbage consumption capacity of the plant. The LG emphasized that increasing the consumption of garbage from Okhla Landfill Site would not only benefit a large population living in the South Delhi areas but also ensure that fresh garbage is not added to the existing mound in Okhla.
The LG also directed officials to expedite work on the completion of the Waste-to-Energy Plant coming up at Tehkhand in South Delhi by August this year. The Tehkhand plant will generate another 25 MW electricity by using nearly 2,000 MT of RDF waste in addition to 500 MT of C&D waste.
