Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways, Shri Nitin Gadkari along with Lt. Governor, Delhi, Shri V.K. Saxena today inaugurated the revamped and beautified stretch of road between Dhaula Kuan and IGI Airport. Speaking on the occasion, Shri Gadkari commended the Lt Governor for his single minded commitment to the advancement and revamp of the National Capital and further pledged an amount of Rs 1500 Cr from the Central Road Fund for improvement and upgradation of related infrastructure in Delhi. The fund, he said will be used for projects envisaged by the State Government under guidance and supervision of the LG. 

Completed over 09 months, revamp of this arterial road stretch that acts as the primary entry and exit to and from the National Capital, was conceptualized after the Lt. Governor visited the stretch along with the team of officers on 26.05.2022, immediately after taking oath of office.

Subsequently, Shri Saxena requested the Union Minister, Shri Gadkari for support on the project, who was more than forthcoming and ensured all possible help including financial, from the NHAI.  Once works commenced, towards the end of July, 2022, the Lt. Governor consistently visited and monitored the progress on a fortnightly basis.  Scrutiny of progress through then and now pictures and videos, acquisition of statues, physical cleaning of the stretch, restoration of footpaths and walkways and extensive horticultural upgradation marked the exercise.    

Dhaula Kuan to T3 tunnel of airport is about 8 km in length. This is one of the busiest arterial roads leading to Jaipur, Gurugram, Dwarka, Najafgarh and IGI Airport. All the travellers coming to Delhi and going out pass through this road. During forthcoming G-20 Summit, many international dignitaries will be visiting Delhi and therefore keeping in view the immense importance of this road, beautification of this road was undertaken. 

Speaking on the occasion, Shri Saxena profusely thanked Shri Gadkari for his support in the realisation of this project and assures him that more suitable projects will be planned, now that the Union Minister had provided a massive financial support amounting to Re 1500 Cr. He further said that the aesthetic upgradation of this stretch has been done, not only in wake of the G20 but with an aim of creating permanent assets in the Capital that will help change the landscape of the city. 

This beautification program was completely funded by the NHAI with an estimated cost of nearly Rs. 22 crore. The work includes upgradation of road side horticulture, Pedestrian amenities, aesthetic improvement of existing features such as FOB and Grills, adding fountains and sculptures to the horizon and other articles of beauty as benches, coloured lights, scrolling screen on walls and LED screens on road.

Amongst other features, 30 high jet type fountains have been installed between Dhaula Kuan roundabout to NHAI Wall. Similarly, 9 stone fountains, 2 stone carved big and 2 stone carved small fountains have been installed.

Carved stone bull in front of pitcher surrounded by geyser fountains have been installed near NHAI wall. 2 big lions of grey stone of 13 feet height surrounded by geyser fountains have been installed near T-1 X-ing. 6 small lions of white marble looking in all directions have been also placed at this X-sing. 2 big elephants’ sculptures of pink sand stone have been installed near airport entry at Mehram Nagar surrounded by geyser fountains and cascade fountains.

All the sculptures and fountains have been elegantly illuminated. The land surrounding these sculptures and fountains have also been beautified by various (types of plants) Conocarpus, Champa, Ficus, Bamboo etc., (shrubs) Tecoma, Hamelia, Chandni, Hibiscus, Bougainvillea, Narium (Kaner) etc., (ground cover plants), Wadelia, Asparagus, Syngonium, Lantana, Chlorophytum, Inerme etc.,  (seasonal flowers and grasses) Petunia, Dahlia, Gajenia, Salvia, Nusturrium, Verbina, Calendula etc. 

To display patriotism and nationalism, view cutters at Mehram Nagar have been installed with tricolour and Gandhi Ji’s Charkha.

Scrolling Screens on both side walls between T-1 crossing to terminal 3 tunnel have been placed to display rich culture of various Indian States.

Entire Road side of 8 km has been illuminated with around 600 post top lanterns fittings.

3 big LED screens of approximate size 12’x 22' are proposed on road stretch between T-1 crossing to T-3 tunnel.
