At the outset, I take this opportunity to congratulate all the recipients of today’s Xavier Life Time Achievement and Xavier Excellence award. Each of you are the beacons of the very ethos of your alma mater. I also congratulate the Management, the Staff & the Members of the Alumni Association- DOXA, for the remarkable gesture shown in, acknowledging and appreciating the contributions of these former students to their alma mater and the society at large.

02.  जेज़ुइट education, as is perceived worldwide, focuses on shaping young hearts and minds in their formative years, to evolve holistically. The contribution of the जेज़ुइट Society in transforming the Indian educational landscape, indeed has been, exemplary.

03.  I am given to understand, that the Xaverians are trained to become better human-beings, with passion for excellence, desire for freedom, courage, confidence and a constant desire to learn.  The Society of Jesus, is a renowned proponent of education, that transcends boundaries of the classrooms.  It aims at shaping leaders in service, men and women of competence, conscience and compassionate commitment.

04.  They believe in producing principled and value oriented persons, for the betterment of the society, and the country. As I understand, your school as well, motivates each student to become a winner in life, even as they follow the motto that says, ‘Everyone is a Winner’.

05.  As I stand here today, I can see the very personification of these virtues and values, that this institution inculcates in every student.

Dear Friends, Ladies & Gentlemen,

06.  We all, unanimously agree that the world today, like never before, needs socially committed and responsible citizens. Citizens, who rise up to larger interests, rather than, just the personal or professional. In shaping such citizens, the role of institutions like St. Xavier’s is vital.

07.  For us Indians, the phrase Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” is the loftiest Vedantic principle. It promotes a global perspective, and prioritizes the greater good, over individual or family. It encourages considering the welfare of others, fostering global solidarity and responsibility on various issues, including climate change, sustainable development, peace, and appreciation of differences.

08.  The school song of St. Xavier’s, that I just heard, resonates and endorses every aspect of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” - the world being a family, that is bound by Peace and Harmony. I, being the next door neighbor, have the privilege of waking up to listen to this beautiful song that resonate positive vibe and energy.

Dear Friends, Ladies & Gentlemen,

09.  In a few days from now, we will be participating in the greatest festival that a democracy offers.  We will be casting our votes to elect not just a government, but far more.  We will be making a choice of what do we want for our city, for ourselves and our families. We will be making a decision about, what we want, in terms of governance, education, sanitation, public transport, environment and health, for the next five years.

10.  All of you present in this auditorium are leaders in your own right.  You are thinking individuals and represent large peer groups.  I urge you to take decisions, not on the basis of “manufactured consent” or “manufactured dissent”.  Let the blitz of publicity not influence your decision.  The only factor, to my mind, that should inform your decision is your welfare, the welfare of your children, and the greater good of the city.

11.  Also, I would like to underline here that each and every vote counts.  Anyone sitting at home, thinking that it will not make a difference, because the rest are voting, does the greatest disservice to democracy.  Someone who does not vote, automatically loses the right to hold the government accountable.  I, therefore, appeal to you all to come out in full force, and exercise your franchise, and also encourage those around you to vote.

12.  I, once again congratulate all the awardees of today’s ceremony, and express my sincere gratitude to this marvelous institution, for having gifted humanity with such meritorious and socially committed citizens.

JAI HIND
