- I thank you for inviting me to the Inaugural Session of the CII Delhi Annual SessionandBusiness Conference. I am happy to be here amongst you all.
- It is a matter of pleasure for me to be addressing this gathering of CEOs and Captains of Industry. I have been seeking to foster a participatory role for every segment of the society, on the path to change the face of Delhi and you have a significant role to play.
- I have been told that this is the biggest Annual Conference that solely focuses on Delhi’s State development. Therefore, to my mind, it should be an ideal forum for a dialogue that involves proactive participation of the Industry in partnering with the government.
- It is good to see that theme of CII Delhi for 2022-23andofthis Conference “Leveraging Technology Towards Vision 2047, Sustainability, Competitiveness, Growth, Inclusiveness.”I think this theme for the year is very apt keeping in mind the challenges as well as the opportunities of Delhi.
- Taking on from the theme of the Conference, I would like to underline the challenges, that the National Capital faces and exhort all of you to harness and leverage technology to address them.
- Sustainable management and disposal of Municipal Solid Waste, rejuvenation of the Yamuna, availability of water, managing air pollution and augmentation of civic infrastructure in Delhi, are primary areas of concern. These are indeed areas, where technology essentially needs to be leveraged. These are also areas where Industry can be willing partners by way of enterprise as well as Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
- Post-pandemic, bridging the global digital divide has become increasingly important since several aspects such as healthcare, transactions, education, and banking have seen an increased dependency on digital tools. Enhancing digital literacy is key towards narrowing the digital divide. India needs to foster a digitally ready and inclusive society, reducing connection inequalities, and promoting trust in the global digital ecosystem.
- I understand a lot of work has been done by CII Delhi for enhancing capabilities of various sectors and achieve the vision 2047 with the help of technology.
- Last year we celebrated 75 years of independence which marked the glorious history of its people, culture, and achievements of India.
- This year India holds the Presidency of the G20, and I am happy that the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has been formally designated as the B20 secretariat by Government of India to lead and host B20 during India's G20 presidency.
- Delhi as the capital will have a great role to play and be the role model for the success of G20 in India.
- We all know that Delhi is entrenched with an overwhelming history, culture, life, and everything else one could possibly imagine. Delhi being the Nation’s Capital, makes me proud as it is a true representation of India. People from all the states are here. It personifies UNITY in DIVERSITY.
- It is the hub of trade, commerce andpolitics in India and has a huge potential as a growth engine, as far as the success of Indian Economy is concerned. It is one of the most prosperous states with one of the highest per capita income.
- Though the rate of migration has stabilized as many workers prefer to settle down in nearby suburbs, Delhi continues to be the favorite destination for many people in India, seeking livelihood and improved employment opportunities. The city has been registering robust growth, fuelled by government and private investment for the past several decades.
- Along with all this, Delhi has many issues linked to urbanization, like pollution, traffic, space crunch etc.Unplanned urbanization, sub optimal living standards, exploding population are just some of the contributing factors.
- Accordingly, some areas where Delhi needs to focus are, Waste Management, Water Management and Planned Urban Development.
- Delhi is experiencing increasing pressure to meet the demand for water. We also need to work on sustainable waste and water management throughproper disposal of waste and correct usage of water.
- We have launched an intensive campaign to clean the Yamuna floodplains and the drains falling into it, as part of a mega drive to rejuvenate the river.
- On waste we have initiated many programmes to treat the legacy waste in landfills and involved citizens on waste segregation and composting at both house and community level.
- Single use plastic and e-waste management are also areas we have been working upon and we would need the support of industry to make this a success.
- Many urban development projects to decongest Delhi are in progress and we are in the final phases of bringing out the Master Plan for the Delhi – MPD 2041.
- Industry, Government, Civil Society and citizen in Delhi must work hand in hand for the overall development keeping environment and sustainability in focus. All need to work in partnership to make Delhi a better place and achieve the vision 2047.
- Chairman of CII had come to meet me early last year when I took over the charge and shared the good work CII has been doing in Delhi in Skill& Community Development, Environment & Sustainability and Industrial Development in Delhi.
- I congratulate MrSinghania, for all the work that you and your able team have put in through the year. I hope to see that this good work only gets better with every passing year.
- I also seek regular engagement of CII in policy matters, sharing its concern and recommendation with government. It is important for us as policy makers to have regular feedback and participation from industry to draw a balanced and robust eco-system.
- I once again would like to thank you all for inviting me for this CII Delhi Annual Session and Conference.
