Distinguished Guests, Members of the YMCA, Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is a great pleasure and honor to participate in the National-level Inauguration of the YMCA to commemorate its 180th Anniversary Celebrations, worldwide. Today, we gather not only to celebrate the legacy of the Young Men’s Christian Association, but also to reflect on its profound impact on our communities over the years.

02.    I am informed that the YMCA movement was founded in June 1844 by Sir George Williams with just 22 young men.  I am happy to note that it has now grown into a global force, with approximately 125 National Associations and over 58 million members. This incredible journey from its modest beginnings to a worldwide movement, is a testament to the enduring values and vision of the YMCA.

03.    I am also happy to underline that the core principles of fostering spiritual, intellectual and physical well-being of individuals, that have guided the YMCA in its mission, resonates with the goals set by our Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi Ji.

04.    YMCA's Vision 2030, which focuses on Community Wellbeing, Meaningful Work, Sustainable Planet, and a Just World, captures its commitment to fostering a better future. This vision aligns with the YMCA's mission to empower young people and communities, worldwide to build a just, sustainable, equitable, and inclusive world where every person can thrive in body, mind, and spirit.

05.    In India, the YMCA has established itself as a premier organization within the 27-nation, Asia & Pacific Alliance of YMCAs. With over 900 affiliated YMCAs and a membership of around 300,000 the Indian YMCA has made significant strides in fostering moral and intellectual wellbeing, since its establishment in Chennai in 1890. This remarkable growth is a reflection of the YMCA’s unwavering commitment to service and its ability to adapt to the changing needs of society.

06.    The YMCA’s commitment to improving the lives of young men through various initiatives is truly commendable. From sports and personal fitness to child care, skill development, and education, the YMCA’s diverse programs have been instrumental in uplifting the poor and downtrodden. The organization’s initiatives to offer a broad range of programs catering to the needs of the underprivileged are especially noteworthy. These programs not only provide immediate relief but also equip individuals with the skills and confidence necessary for long- term success.

07.    One of the hallmarks of the YMCA is its inclusive approach, welcoming individuals from all walks of life. This inclusivity is vital in today’s world, where unity and cooperation are essential for addressing global challenges.

Dear Friends, Ladies & Gentlemen,

08.    Moreover, the YMCA's impact extends beyond social services. It has been a cradle of innovation in sports and physical education. It came as a pleasant surprise for me to know that, basketball was invented on December 21, 1891, by James Naismith, a physical education instructor at the YMCA's Springfield College. Similarly, Volleyball was invented on February 9, 1895, by William C. Morgan, a physical education director in Holyoke, USA. These contributions have, indeed revolutionized sports and physical education worldwide.

09.    The YMCA's global family also prides itself on the association with four Nobel Laureates: Henri Dunant (Paris) in 1901, Sir John R. Mott (USA) in 1946, Prof. Amartya Sen (Calcutta) in 1998, and Martti Ahtisaari (Finland) in 2008. These individuals' accomplishments underscore the YMCA's commitment to fostering intellectual and humanitarian excellence.

10.    The YMCA's educational contributions are equally impressive. The YMCA College of Physical Education in Madras, established in 1920, has been a pioneer in promoting physical education in India. The introduction of "Futsal" (Five-a-side Soccer) in 1930 is another example of the YMCA's innovative spirit.  You will be happy to know that the Delhi Development Authority is actively promoting “Futsal” in its sports complexes.

11.    As we celebrate this significant milestone, I encourage all members and affiliates of the YMCA to continue their noble work with renewed vigour. The challenges we face today, such as poverty, inequality, and social injustice, are numerous, but with collective effort and a shared vision, we can overcome them. The YMCA’s ethos of service, compassion, and inclusivity, will undoubtedly guide us in creating a better future for all.

12.    In addition to its traditional programs, the YMCA must also embrace new opportunities and challenges presented by the modern world. Technological advancements, environmental sustainability, and global interface are areas, where the YMCA can make a significant impact. By integrating these elements into its programs, the YMCA can ensure that it remains relevant and continues to serve the evolving needs of society.

13.    Furthermore, I urge the YMCA to strengthen its partnerships with other organizations, both governmental and non-governmental, to expand its reach and impact. In this context, it will be logical to align with the Viksit Bharat@2047 vision enumerated by the Prime Minister.

14.    Collaborative efforts can lead to innovative solutions and greater resources, enhancing the effectiveness of the YMCA’s initiatives in nation building. Be it Digital India, Skill India, Khelo India or Swachch Bharat, YMCA can play a significant role by establishing synergy with their various components.

15.    As I conclude, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the YMCA on its 180th Anniversary. Let us take inspiration from the past and work together, towards a brighter, more inclusive future. The legacy of the YMCA is a source of pride and motivation, reminding us of the power of community and the importance of serving others.  I would like to end by reading out this couplet in Hindi:

Thank you for your dedication and commitment to the well-being of our society.

Thank you.

जय हिन्द
