Faculty Members, Students and distinguished gathering in the audience.
At the outset, I compliment the Faculty, Doctors and administration of ILBS on the occasion of their 15th Foundation Day. Indeed, during these 15 years, you have established yourself as an institution of eminence in the field of GI Medicine and Surgery. Your work in the field of liver related diseases - their treatment as well as prevention is exemplary.
02. Liver diseases are a serious health problem in India. They can be just as common as heart disease, and they can have a major impact on people's lives. Unfortunately, many people don't know how to prevent liver disease, and there aren't enough resources to treat it. Hepatitis, alcohol, and obesity can all damage the liver. In some cases, the damage can be permanent. This can lead to a need for a liver transplant, but there aren't enough organ donors in India.
03. It's important to raise awareness about liver disease and how to prevent it. We also need to improve access to treatment and research. And that is where an institute of eminence like the ILBS comes in. I commend the ILBS team, for the stellar work they are doing in this field.
04. In just fifteen years, this Institute has given hope to millions of people by providing top-notch care, at very affordable prices. They also do advanced research on liver and biliary diseases. I am informed that ILBS has treated more than 1,20,000 patients during the last one year.
05. They've even succeeded with liver and kidney transplants, performing over 1100 liver transplants and 300 kidney transplants. I hope they continue to be a leader in the field and develop the best practices, for patient care. The Institute is also a leader in organ donation, raising awareness and helping to build organ banks.
06. ILBS is not just a hospital, it's also a prestigious University. This attracts some of the brightest medical students from across India. The Institute offers innovative teaching programs focused on liver diseases, including the first-of-their-kind DM in Hepatology, M.Ch in हेपाटो-पैनक्रियाटो-बिलीयरी Surgery, Pediatric Hepatology, and Organ Transplant Anesthesia. It's inspiring to see ILBS training new specialists in this critical field who will serve our country's healthcare needs in the future.
Friends,
07. As I often say, as Physicians, Surgeons and Doctors, you are second only to the almighty creator of human life. You have the capacity and capability of sustaining and improving human lives. At this juncture, it will be in the fitness of things underline the importance of compassion in your profession. The medical profession, to my mind, is the most important profession. As much as it requires expertise, knowledge and professionalism, it requires compassion.
08. A patient is not just a client in your profession. He or she is a deeply distressed human being, whose emotions are frayed. It has been my experience that a patient hearing, a gentle pat or an encouraging engagement often leads to half the ailment cured. I take this opportunity to urge all of you to engrain compassion in your day to day dealings with your patients. I know, that yours, is a demanding profession - the sheer numbers that you deal with are staggering. Having said that it is my considered view that your patient should not only be a number for you, but a living human being.
09. At the same time, in a country like ours, it is essential that healthcare is affordable. ILBS should strive and adopt every possible measure to ensure that the best of care is provided to its patients at affordable costs.
10. As I come towards the end of my address, I would like to quote what someone has said,
“इश्वर सबके जीवन की रक्षा ख़ुद से नहीं कर पाते, इसीलिए उन्होंने धरती पर अपनी रूप में डॉक्टरों को भेज दिया”
11. My friends, this puts an enormous responsibility on you and I am sure that you all will always stand up to these responsibilities. I wish you and the Institute every success in the coming years and assure you of my full support and encouragement for a bright future.
