Sh. Anil Baijal, Hon’ble Lt. Governor, Delhi chaired a meeting today at Raj Niwas convened by Chairman, EPCA focusing on dumping of C&D waste in Nallahs which chokes, stagnates and hinders flow of these nallahs resulting in severe environmental damage.

The meeting was attended by Hon’ble Minister (Environment & Forest), Sh. Imran Hussain;  Dr. Bhure Lal, Chairman, EPCA; Secretary (Environment), GNCTD; Commissioner (NDMC); Commissioner (EDMC); CEO (DJB); Member Secretary (DPCC), GNCTD and other senior officers from Haryana and UP.

At the outset, Dr. Bhure Lal, Chairman, EPCA informed Hon’ble LG that during his visit to some Nallahs particularly Najafgarh and Shahdara Drains it was observed that conditions are really pathetic and stench is unbearable. Gases coming out from such stagnating dirty water are causing harm to human health. He also apprised that entire NCR region is dotted by C&D and plastic waste mountains, which are responsible for deterioration not only in the air quality but also adversely affect underground water quality.

Hon’ble LG was informed about the initiatives taken by Irrigation & Flood Control Department for rejuvenation of drains and water bodies. Major behavioural change campaigns are required for maintenance of drain, disposal of the C&D waste and municipal waste by the local residents along the banks of the drains. Septage disposal in the drain is a major threat to these natural drains. It was also informed that Department has got a study conducted from CRRI for the usage of Dredged soil/Silt removed from drains. It was further apprised that in order to prevent dumping of C&D Waste / Garbage along banks of the drains, flying squads may be deployed.

Hon’ble LG, Hon’ble Minister (Environment & Forest), Dr. Bhure Lal, Chairman, EPCA directed all concerned agencies for proper collection of C&D waste, its scientific disposal and proper utilization of the processed products.
