Hon’ble Lt. Governor, Delhi Sh. Anil Baijal has written to Hon’ble CM, Delhi with reference to his letter where the Hon’ble CM has raised the issue of the precarious water situation in Delhi.

Hon’ble Lt. Governor stated that the first time Hon’ble CM mentioned this matter to him was on 16th May 2018 and that too along with other issues without any accompanying material or background note on such a complex issue.

Hon’ble Lt. Governor noted that before meeting him on 16.05.2018, Hon’ble CM chose to cancel each weekly scheduled meeting on Wednesdays for the last two months. Given the importance and complexity of the issue, Hon’ble CM should have met and discussed the matter with him earlier along with officers of Delhi Jal Board, rather than spending time on ‘Dharnas without reason’ and now sending frantic letters and messages at this late juncture when the matter has escalated to a critical stage. Hon’ble LG also observed that the manner in which all the letters sent by Hon’ble CM are released on social media even before reaching his office, betrays an attempt to sensationalize the issue rather than seriously resolve it.

Hon’ble LG mentioned that sharing of water between beneficiary states is a very sensitive and delicate issue and attempt should have been made to resolve it in the first place through mutual negotiation and dialogue rather than through confrontation.

Hon’ble Lt. Governor further stated given how critical the matter is, he has already taken up the matter with both the Central Government and Haryana Government so that the people of Delhi do not suffer from water shortages in the summer months. In this regard, Hon’ble LG has written to both Hon’ble CM, Haryana and Hon’ble Union Minister of Water Resources, GoI and requested them to intervene so that adequate water supply for Delhi is ensured.

Hon’ble Lt. Governor requested Hon’ble CM, Delhi to vigorously follow-up the matter with UYRB and other stakeholders for finding solution to this burning issue on sustainable basis. Hon’ble LG noted that since ‘water’ is the only portfolio held directly by Hon’ble CM and Hon’ble CM also holds charge of Chairperson, Delhi Jal Board, the matter should receive his undivided attention as presenting Delhi’s case in the UYRB effectively with all facts is critical for its resolution.

Finally, Hon’ble Lt. Governor assured Hon’ble CM full support and expressed hope that the issue would get resolved by concerted and sincere efforts made by all stakeholders in the interest of the people of Delhi.
