I am happy to know that the Press Council of India is observing the National Press Day on November 16 and is commemorating the day by holding a discussion on “Challenges before the Media” and bringing out a souvenir to mark the occasion.

The fourth estate is an integral component of our daily lives. Its importance in upholding and protecting democratic values cannot be over-emphasized. It does not just disseminate correct information but also shapes public opinion on important issues of national interest.

The media today faces myriad challenges from various quarters. As such, it is imperative for media to devise mechanisms to insulate it from internal and external pressures. I am sure that given our glorious traditions of independent and fearless journalism, media shall be able to withstand all challenges and shall continue to perform its duties in a selfless manner.

I convey my warm wishes to the Press Council of India on the occasion of the National Press Day and wish the celebrations my very best. I also congratulate the award winning journalists, photographers and freelancers on this occasion.
