• LG launches Sandalwood plantation drive at Qutabgarh village in South-West Delhi.
• Experts from Kannauj roped in to train 500 farmers in grooming and upkeep of 1,000 Chandan trees.
• 1,000 Sandalwood trees, once matured will prove to be a financial asset worth Rs. 150 Cr for the farmers, apart from providing the city with a fragrant green cover.
The Lt. Governor Shri V.K. Saxena today launched the first of its kind, Sandalwood (चंदन) plantation drive at Qutabgarh village in the National Capital, with 1,000 saplings being planted by 500 farmers of the village. Shri Saxena who had on July 03rd, 2022, instructed officials to plant 10,000 sandalwood trees in Delhi, expressed the hope that these 1,000 trees once grown to their full length in the next 10-12 years will become a financial asset worth Rs. 150 Cr for the farmers, apart from providing the city with a fragrant green cover. Area MP Shri Hans Raj Hans, Chief Secretary and other senior officials accompanied the LG on the occasion.
Interacting with over a thousand farmers present on the occasion, the LG recalled his earlier association with the village when as Chairman, KVIC, he had facilitated apiculture (bee-keeping) and successful rejuvenation of a village pond in the locality. Shri Saxena informed that experts from Kannauj from UP had been roped in for training the farmers who had undertaken the planation of Sandalwood trees on their plots in grooming and upkeep of these trees.
The LG also instructed officials from Delhi Development Authority (DDA) present on the occasion to ensure the maintenance of the rejuvenated ponds. In this regard, he asked for deepening of one of the ponds and erection of railings around the other to ensure that it is not encroached and garbage and waste is not thrown into it. It may be noted that in line with the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi vision under the ‘Jal Jeevan Mission’, the LG, right since taking over has been insisting on the identification, rejuvenation and maintenance of water bodies in the Capital in a mission-mode with the aim of making Delhi self-sufficient in its water needs.
