I am pleased to learn that the Institute of Town Planners, India is organizing the 69th National Town & Country Planners’ Conference on the theme ‘Sustainable Development Goals in the context of COVID-19’ during 26th – 28th February, 2021 at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The theme of the Conference is particularly relevant to present times - as the COVID 19 pandemic has had a far reaching impact on both the economy and society at the national and global levels.
Currently with pressure for increased urbanization , there is an imperative need to undertake inclusive and comprehensive planning of existing towns and cities in India with a robust regime of incentives and disincentives for enabling their ecologically sustainable and resilient development/ redevelopment. At the same time, there is an urgent need to fund and promote the development of new ‘planned’ and ‘smart’ cities in India on fast track mode in active collaboration with the private sector. This is important not only to take the pressure off from the existing cities but also to boost the economy in manifold ways.
I am confident that the Conference will provide a useful platform to planners, architects, administrators, investors and other professionals for detailed deliberations on various aspects of achieving sustainable development goals in the context of cities and would come forward with meaningful recommendations.
I extend my best wishes to the organizers and participants on this occasion.
